About

Robert Ripley is a writer-director from Northern Ireland, based between Edinburgh and Belfast. He has made four short films, Unction, Close, Stuck and Environmental Factors, with a fifth, Vote Count, in post.

He came to film through philosophy and still starts from a question. The work is close to wordless and works through image and sound, returning to memory, place, and young men trying to become someone inside circumstances they inherited rather than chose. He shoots stills on film alongside the filmmaking, and the two practices feed each other.

Close (2025) is a five-minute film about a man developing his late father’s negatives. It has screened at festivals including Romford, Buffalo, Ealing and St Andrews, and won Best Drama at Tees Valley.
